What I He Lived For

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, he governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, he blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

I he sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy---ecstasy so great that I would often he sacrificed all the rest of my life for a few hours for this joy. I he sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness---that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I he sought it, finally, because in the union of love I he seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heen that saints and poets he imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what---at last---I he found.

With equal passion I he sought knowledge. I he wished to understand the hearts of men. I he wished to know why the stars shine. And I he tried to rehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I he achieved.

Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hatred burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

This has been my life. I he found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.

When Love Beckons You

When love beckons to you, follow him, though his ways are hard and steep. And when his wings enfold you, yield to him, though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you. And when he speaks to you, believe in him, though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, so shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

But if, in your fear, you would seek only love’s peace and love’s pleasure, then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love’s threshing-floor, into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears. Love gives naught but it self and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not, nor would it be possessed, for love is sufficient unto love.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and must he desires, let these be your desires:

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.

To know the pain of too much tenderness.

To be wounded by your own understanding of love;

And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;

To return home at eventide with gratitude;

And then to sleep with a payer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

被自己对爱的理解所伤害;

在黎明带着轻快的心醒来并感谢又一个有家的日子;

在黄昏怀着感恩之心回家;

The Goodness of Life

Though there is much to be concerned about, there is far, far more for which to be thankful. Though life’s goodness can at times be overshadowed, it is never outweighed.

For every single act that is senselessly destructive, there are thousands more small, quiet acts of love, kindness and compassion. For every person who seeks to hurt, there are many, many more who devote their lives to helping and to healing.

There is goodness to life that cannot be denied.

In the most magnificent vistas and in the smallest details, look closely, for that goodness always comes shining through.

There is no limit to the goodness of life. It grows more abundant with each new encounter. The more you experience and reciate the goodness of life, the more there is to be lived.

Even when the cold winds blow and the world seems to be covered in foggy shadows, the goodness of life lives on. Open your eyes, open your heart, and you will see that goodness is everywhere.

Though the goodness of life seems at times to suffer setbacks, it always endures. For in the darkest moment it becomes vividly clear that life is a priceless treasure. And so the goodness of life is made even stronger by the very things that would oppose it.

Time and time again when you feared it was gone forever you found that the goodness of life was really only a moment away. Around the next corner, inside every moment, the goodness of life is there to surprise and delight you.

Take a moment to let the goodness of life touch your spirit and calm your thoughts. Then, share your good fortune with another. For the goodness of life grows more and more magnificent each time it is given away.

Though the problems constantly scream for attention and the conflicts ear to rage ever stronger, the goodness of life grows stronger still, quietly, peacefully, with more purpose and meaning than ever before.

The Rainy Day 雨天

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;

It rains, and the wind is never weary;

The vine still clings to the moldering wall,

But at every gust the dead lees fall,

And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold and dark and dreary;

It rains and the wind is never weary;

My though still cling to the moldering past,

But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,

And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart! And cease repining;

Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;

Thy fate is the common fate of all,

Into each life some rain must fall,

Some days must be dark and dreary.

天冷、阴暗、沉闷;

下着雨,风也刮个不停;

我的生活寒冷、阴郁、沉闷;

下着雨,风也刮个不停;

安静吧,忧伤的心!别再悔恨;

乌云后面太阳依然辉煌灿烂;

I Believe

我相信

I believe, for every drop of rain that falls,

A flower grows…

I believe that somewhere in the darkest night,

A candle glows…

I believe for everyone who goes astray,

Someone will come,

To show the way,

I believe, I believe…

I believe, above the storm the smallest prayer,

Will still be heard…

I believe, that someone in that great somewhere,

Hears every word…

Every time I hear a newborn baby cry,

Or touch a leaf,

Or see the sky,

Then I know why, I believe!

The Bridge

Once upon a time two brothers who lived on neighboring farms fell into conflict.

One morning there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s toolbox.

“I’m looking for a few days’ work,” he said. “Perhaps you would he a few small jobs here and there I could help with?”

“Yes,” said the elder brother. “I do he a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That’s my neighbor; in fact, it’s my younger brother’s. Last week there was a meadow between us, but he took his bulldozer to the river levee, and now there is a creek between us. See that pile of lumber by the barn? I want you to build me a fence—an 8-foot fence—so I won’t need to see his face any more.”

The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”

The elder brother had to go to town on business, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready, and then he was off. About sunset when John returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. John’s eyes opened wide. There was no fence there at all.

It was a bridge—a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! A fine piece of work, handrails and all and the neighbor, his younger brother, was coming across, his hand outstretched.

“You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I’ve said and done.” The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hand, then embracing each other.

They turned to see the carpenter raise his toolbox on his shoulder. “No, wait! Stay a few days. I’ve a lot of other projects for you,” said John. “I’d love to stay on.” The carpenter said, “but I he many more bridges to build.”

The story goes that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend sled the other one in the face.

The one who got sled felt hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: "Today my best friend sled me in the face."

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been sled got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend sed him.

After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: "Today my best friend sed my life."

The friend who had sled and sed his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now you write on a stone. Why?"

The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But when someone does something good for us, we must engre it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

A Beautiful Scenery

In campus, the boys and the girls are beautiful scenery. They like to imagine, and to daydream. They seem to know everything but they know nothing thoroughly. They want to do everything but they are too impatient and easily irritated. They hope to fly in the sky but fear the dark clouds; and they hope to swim in the ocean, but are afraid of the furious wes.

The boys like to ride an old bicycle, and run wildly in the street like madmen. They wish they could escape from the school and trel all around the world.

The girls like to wear red skirts and tight clothes. They admire shoulder-long hair and cool suits; they worship pop stars like Liu Dehua and Zhang Xinzhe and keep their pictures in their diaries as well as in their heart.

The boys like to sing, “I am a wolf from the north”, however terrible it sounds. Then they throw away their books and rush to the playground with a football.

The girls like to play with their hair. They plaid, and then take it apart. How can they put their complicated feelings in good order?

The boys and girls like to make a daily plan in the morning, but they always find that the plan is still on the paper when the sun sets.

The boys and girls he tried for hundreds of thousands of times to change those theories and formula which he been obeyed for millions of years on this planet. They are eager to burn themselves with the passion of life, and they are looking forward to a completely free lifestyle. But, they can't. What they can do is to walk out of the campus and buy some gum. They chew and chew, until it is tasteless, but they are still unwilling to spit it out.

I will persist until I succeed.

The prizes of life are at the end of each journey, not near the beginning; and it is not given to me to know how many steps are necessary in order to reach my goal. Failure I may still encounter at the thousandth step, yet success hides behind the next bend in the road. Never will I know how close it lies unless I turn the corner.

Always will I take another step. If that is of no ail I will take another, and yet another. In truth, one step at a time is not too difficult.

I will persist until I succeed.

Henceforth, I will consider each day's effort as but one blow of my blade against a mighty oak. The first blow may cause not a tremor in the wood, nor the second, nor the third. Each blow, of itself, may be trifling, and seem of no consequence. Yet from childish swipes the oak will eventually tumble. So it will be with my efforts of today.

I will be liken to the raindrop which washes away the mountain; the ant who devours a tiger; the star which brightens the earth; the sle who builds a pyramid. I will build my castle one brick at a time for I know that small attempts, repeated, will complete any undertaking.

I will persist until I succeed.

I will never consider defeat and I will remove from my vocabulary such words and phrases as quit, cannot, unable, impossible, out of the question, improbable, failure, unworkable, hopeless, and retreat; for they are the words of fools. I will oid despair but if this disease of the mind should infect me then I will work on in despair. I will toil and I will endure. I will ignore the obstacles at my feet and keep mine eyes on the goals above my head, for I know that where dry desert ends, green grass grows.

I will persist until I succeed.

I will remember the ancient law of erages and I will bend it to my good. I will persist with knowledge that each failure to sell will increase my chance for success at the next attempt. Each nay I hear will bring me closer to the sound of yea. Each frown I meet only prepares me for the smile to come. Each misfortune I encounter will carry in it the seed of tomorrow's good luck. I must he the night to reciate the day. I must fail often to succeed only once.

I will persist until I succeed.

I will try, and try, and try again. Each obstacle I will consider as a mere detour to my goal and a challenge to my profession. I will persist and develop my skills as the mariner develops his, by learning to ride out the wrath of each storm.

I will persist until I succeed.

Henceforth, I will learn and ly another secret of those who excel in my work. When each day is ended, not regarding whether it has been a success or a failure, I will attempt to achieve one more sale. When my thoughts beckon my tired body homeward I will resist the temptation to depart. I will try again. I will make one more attempt to close with victory, and if that fails I will make another. Never will I allow any day to end with a failure. Thus will I plant the seed of tomorrow's success and gain an insurmountable advantage over those who cease their labor at a prescribed time. When others cease their struggle, the mine will begin, and my harvest will be full.

I will persist until I succeed.

Nor will I allow yesterday's success to lull me into today's complacency, for this is the great foundation of failure. I will forget the henings of the day that is gone, whether they were good or bad, and greet the new sun with confidence that this will be the best day of my life.

So long as there is breath in me, that long will I persist. For now I know one of the greatest principles of success; if I persist long enough I will win.

I will persist. I will win.

One of the most important habits in life is to feed your mind with positive mental food. Remember, you are very susceptible to the suggested influences in your environment, whether radio, television, newspapers, magazines, billboards or conversations with other people. Your mind is your most important and precious asset. You must protect it and keep it clean, clear and focused on what you want, rather than allowing it to be polluted by the negative influences around you.

Refuse to watch terror or trash on television. Refuse to read about all the murders, robberies, rapes and tragedies in the newspapers. Refuse to listen to endless hours of mindless radio commentary on all the problems in the modern world. Refuse to engage in endless conversations with people about all the political and social problems in your nation or community. Keep your mind clean, clear, positive and free.

Not only do you become what you think about, but also you become what you feed into your mind on a regular basis. If you want to be positive, optimistic and hy, continually feed your mind with positive books and articles, positive audio learning programs, positive input and information from other experts in your field, and positive conversations with other optimistic goal-oriented people who are going somewhere with their lives.

As a high school , I did all I could to help my boys win their games. I rooted as hard for victory as they did.

A dramatic incident, however, following a game in which I officiated as a referee, changed my perspective on victories and defeats. I was refereeing a league championship basketball game in New Rochelle, New York, between New Rochelle and Yonkers High.

New Rochelle was ed by Dan O'Brien, Yonkers by Les Beck. The gym was crowded to capacity, and the volume of noise made it impossible to hear. The game was well played and closely contested. Yonkers was leading by one point as I glanced at the clock and discovered there were but 30 seconds left to play.

  Yonkers, in possession of the ball, passed off — shot — missed. New Rochelle recovered — pushed the ball up court — shot. The ball rolled tantalizingly around the rim and off. The fans shrieked.

  New Rochelle, the home team, recovered the ball, and ted it in for what looked like victory. The tumult was deafening. I glanced at the clock and saw that the game was over. I hadn't heard the final buzzer because of the noise. I checked with the other official, but he could not help me.

  Still seeking help in this bedlam, I roached the timekeeper, a young man of 17 or so. He said, "Mr. Covino, the buzzer went off as the ball rolled off the rim, before the final tap-in was made."

  I was in the unenviable position of hing to tell Coach O'Brien the sad news. "Dan," I said, "time ran out before the final basket was ted in. Yonkers won the game."

  His face clouded over. The young timekeeper came up. He said, "I'm sorry, Dad. The time ran out before the final basket."

  Suddenly, like the sun coming out from behind a cloud, Coach O'Brien's face lit up. He said, "That's okay, Joe. You did what you had to do. I'm proud of you."

  Turning to me, he said, "Al, I want you to meet my son, Joe."

  The two of them then walked off the court together, the 's arm around his son's shoulder.

Knowledge and virtue

Knowledge is one thing, virtue is another; good sense is not conscience, refinement is not humility, nor is largeness and justness of view faith. Philosophy, however enlightened, however profound, gives no command over the passions, no influential motives, no vivifying principles. Liberal Education makes not the Christian, not the Catholic, but the gentleman. It is well to be a gentleman, it is well to he a cultivated intellect, a delicate taste, a candid, equitable, dispassionate mind, a noble and courteous bearing in the conduct of life--these are the connatural qualities of a large knowledge; they are the objects of a University; I am advocating, I shall illustrate and insist upon them; but still, I repeat, they are no guarantee for sanctity or even for conscientiousness, they may attach to the man of the world, to the profligate, to the heartless, pleasant, alas, and attractive as he shows when decked out in them. Taken by themselves, they do but seem to be what they are not; they look like virtue at a distance, but they are detected by close observers, and on the long run; and hence it is that they are popularly accused of pretense and hypocrisy, not, I repeat, from their own fault, but because their professors and their admirers persist in taking them for what they are not, and are officious in arrogating for them a praise to which they he no claim. Quarry the granite rock with razors, or moor the vessel with a thread of silk, then may you hope with such keen and delicate instruments as human knowledge and human reason to contend against those giants, the passion and the pride of man.
