Mr. Wang, 85, is a retired army officer. He has been marrying his 69-year-old wife for 50 years. The couple suffers in succession the Alzheimer's disease when getting old. The disease took their health and memory away, but couldn't change their decades of deep feelings of each other. They forget everything, but still recognize each other's face. They look for the other's pany at any time.

Mr. and Mrs. Wang hold each other's hands tightly when taking a walk outside. Only losing the view of his wife for a minute, Mr. Wang will be very anxious.

Mr. Wang usually got angry when forgetting his location. When feeling the bad temper of his hu *** and, Mrs. Wang would lose her temper at the same time and help his hu *** and to blame others.

Recently, Mrs. Wang's condition worsened. She had to receive 24 hours' care in the care center. Mr. Wang had to lee his wife every evening. The separation was hard every time, Mr. Wang kept saying: “Where's my wife? I he to take her home.”

Contrary to Mr. Wang's anxiety, Mrs. Wang, in a serious stage of disease, eared hy every day. She liked to wear red dress and told the people around her that she was going to be married. When people asked her whom she will marry, she voiced out clearly and proudly the name of her hu *** and. Her memory stopped at the hiest period of her life forever.

Love your life

However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest when you are richest. The fault-finder will find faults in paradise.

Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps he some pleasant, thrilling glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man's abode; the snow melts before its door as early in the spring.

I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there and he as cheering thoughts. As in a palace, the town's poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any.

May be they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that they are above being supported by the town, but it often hens that they are not above supporting themselves by dishonest means, which should be more disreputable.

Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old, return to them. Things do not change, we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.

A Timeless Letter of fort

In October 1800 John Todd was born in Rutland, Vermont. Soon afterward his parents moved to Killingworth, Connecticut. When John was six, both his parents died. A kind-hearted aunt in North Killingworth agreed to take John and give him a home. He was brought up by her and lived in her home until he left to study for the ministry.

His aunt took seriously ill and feared she was about to die. In great distress she wrote John Todd a letter in which she asked him to tell her what death would be like.

Here is the letter he sent in reply:

It is now thirty-five years since I, as a little boy of six, was left quite alone in the world. You sent me word you would give me a home and be a kind mother to me. I he never forgotten the day when I made the long journey of ten miles to your house in North Killingworth. I can still recall my disointment when, instead of ing for me yourself, you sent your servant James to fetch me.

I well remember my tears and anxiety as, perched high on your horse and clinging tight to James, I rode off to my new home. Night fell before we finished the journey, and as it grew dark I became lonely and afraid. “Do you think she’ll go to bed before we get there?” I asked James anxiously. “Oh, no,” he said reassuringly. “She’ll stay up for you. When we get out of these woods you’ll see her candle shining in the window.”

Presently we did ride out into the clearing, and there, sure enough, was your candle. I remember you were waiting at the door, that you put your arms close about me and that you lifted me --- a tired and bewildered little boy ---down from the horse. You had a fire burning on the hearth, a hot supper waiting on the stove. After supper you took me to my new room, heard me say my prayers, and then sat beside me until I fell asleep.

You probably realize why I am recalling all this to your memory. Some day soon God will send for you, to take you to a new home. Don’t fear the summons, the strange journey, or the dark messenger of death who will fetch you. God can be trusted to do as much for you as you were kind enough to do for me so many years age. At the end of the road you will find love and a wele waiting, and you will be safe in God’s care. I shall watch you and pray for you till you are out of sight, and then wait for the day when I shall make the same journey myself and find you waiting at the end of the road to greet me.

Change is considerably easier when you he a full complement of supporting partners and unlimited resources. But, since very often it is the shock of a death, divorce or some other life tragedy that unceremoniously tosses us out of our comfort zone to fend for ourselves, it can mean being forced to strike out alone which for many of us is the scariest part of all.

Probably the most difficult thing about pursuing significant change is doing it when you don?t he the knowledge, financial or emotional tools ailable to make the process go smoothly.

However, as difficult as it can be, sometimes reaching our full potential means working without a net. Or, as Tony Ros says, "If you want to take the island, burn the f?ing boats!"

For those truly dedicated to their mission, hing fewer resources and no backup or fallback plan can be a surprising blessing as it forces you to get creative and forge new paths.

I don?t know if it?s possible to lee this world with zero regrets. Because of the natural life cycles and the fact that sometimes it?s the tragedy that causes our awakenings we often he our epiphanies too late to oid certain painful outcomes.

However, it is indefensible to can claim ignorance to the possible ramifications of continued inaction. The choice belongs to each and every one of us. We all he the power to change both our thoughts and behior thereby giving more intentional direction to the remainder of our lives.

She asked the cashier to cancel the transaction. The cashier motions for manager. I smile and offer to pay the balance, which was $20 something dollars.

The woman was very thankful, the cashier was hy.

On my way out the manager handed me a bouquet of mixed flowers. He didn't say anything, just held the flowers out to me.

I saw he was overcomed with emotion. I suspected that if he opened his mouth he would start to cry. I accepted the flowers with thanks and walked out feeling that, for just a few moments, the world had become a better place.

As food is to the body, so is learning to the mind. Our bodies grow and muscles develop with the intake of adequate nutritious food. Likewise, we should keep learning day by day to maintain our keen mental power and expand our intellectual capacity. Constant learning supplies us with inexhaustible fuel for driving us to sharpen our power of reasoning, analysis, and judgment. Learning incessantly is the surest way to keep pace with the times in the information age, and an infallible warrant of success in times of uncertainty.

Once learning stops, vegetation sets in. It is a common fallacy to regard school as the only workshop for the acquisition of knowledge. On the contrary, learning should be a never-ending process, from the cradle to the gre. With the world ever changing so fast, the cease from learning for just a few days will make a person lag behind. What's worse, the animalistic instinct dormant deep in our subconsciousness will come to life, weakening our will to pursue our noble ideal, sing our determination to sweep away obstacles to our success and strangling our desire for the refinement of our character. Lack of learning will inevitably lead to the stagnation of the mind, or even worse, its fossilization, Therefore, to stay mentally young, we he to take learning as a lifelong career.

In my opinion, the schoolwork now being assigned to high school students is too hey. While it is true that students need to study, they need other things as well if they are to grow into healthy and well-rounded adults. High should be allowed more time for play. Plying is not wasting time, as some think. It gives them physical exercise, and also exercise their imagination. Which tends to be stifled by too much study. Finally, the pressure put on high school students by excessive schoolwork can cause serious stress, which is unhealthy physically and mentally. I do not advocate the elimination of schoolwork. I do think, however, that a reduction of the current hey load would be beneficial to students and to the society as a whole.

Lost time is never found again. This is something which I learned very clearly last semester. I spent so much time fooling around that my grades began to suffer. I finally realized that something had to be done. It was time for a change.

Now I he a new plan for using my time wisely. I he set my alarm clock ahead half an hour. This will give me a head start on the day. I he also decided to keep a log of what I do and when I do it. Looking back on what I’ve done will give me some ideas on how to reorganize my time.

Greta always said, "dear, keep walking in sunshine!" no matter how terrible my day started, i always felt sunny walking home from greta’s house-even beneath the winter starlight.

I arrived at greta’s house today just after sunset. an ambulance had stopped a few feet from her door, it’s red lights flashing. when i ran into the old house, greta recognized me right away.

She smiled at me with her unforgettable twinkling blue eyes. she was almost out of breath when she reached out and softly touched my arm. her last words to me were "dear, keep walking in sunshine!"

Whether sixty or six, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike etite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.

An individual human existence should be like a river—small at first, narrowly contained within its banks, and rushing passionately past boulders and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows wider, the banks recede, the waters flow more quietly, and in the end, without any visible break, they become merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their individual being.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity,of the etite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

 Youth

 By Samuel Ullman

Youth is not a time of life; itis a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and suppleknees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of theemotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamentalpredominance of courage over timidity, of the etite for adventure over thelove of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobodygrows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Yearsmay wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear,self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is inevery human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing etite for what’snext and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and myheart, there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite, so long as you areyoung.

When your aerials are down, andyour spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, thenyou’ve grown old, even at 20; but as long as your aerials are up, to catchwes of optimism, there’s hope you may die young at 80.

Ah, beautiful Paris. For centuries this city has attracted the admiration of the world. The allure and charm of Paris captivate all who visit there.

Where can you discover the charm of Paris for yourseIf. Is it in the legacy of all the French rulers who worked to beautify their beloved city? Is it in the famous castles, palaces, statues and monuments? Can you it in the world-class museums, such as the Louvre? Perhaps Paris' allure lies in the zest and style of the Parisians.

When you visit Paris, you don't he to spend all of your time visiting museums and monuments. They are certainly worthy of your time, but ignore them for a day. First take some time to look around and experience life in Paris. You'll find it charming.

Take a stroll along the Seine River. Browse through the art vendors colorful paintings. Peek through delicate iron gates at the well kept gardens. Watch closely for the French attention to detail that has made France synonymous with good taste. You will see it in the design of a doorway or arch and in the little fountains and quaint balconies. No matter where you look, you will find everyday objects transformed into works by art.

Spend some time in a quiet park relaxing on an oid bench. Lie on your back on the green grass. When you need refreshment, try coffee and pastries at a sidewalk cafe. Strike up a conversation with a Parisian. This isn't always easy, though. With such a large international population living in Paris, true natives are hard to find these days.

As evening comes to Paris, enchantment rises with the mist over the riverfront. You may hear music from an outdoor concert nearby classical, jazz, opera or chansons, those French folk songs. Parisians love their music. The starry sky is their auditorium. You can also hear concerts in the chateaux and cathedrals. In Paris the Music never ends.

Don't miss the highlight of Paris evening: eating out. Parisians are proud of their cuisine. And rightly so; it's world famous. Gourmet dining is one of the indispensable joys ofliving. You need a special guidebook to help you choose one of the hundreds of excellent restaurants. The capital of France boasts every regional specialty, cheese and wine the country has to offer. If you don't know what to order, ask for the suggested menu. The chef likes to showcase his best dishes there. Remember, you hen't tasted the true flor ofF

the country maid and her milk can

a country maid was walking along with a can of milk upon her head, when she fell into the following train of reflections."the money for which i shall sell this milk will enable me to increase my stock of eggs to three hundred, these eggs, allowing for what may prove addle, and what may be destroyed by vermin, will produce at least two hundred and fifty chickens.the chickens will be fit to carry to market just at the time when poultry is always dear;so that by the new year i cannot fail of hing money enough to purchase a new gown.green-let me consider-yes,green becomes my complexion best .and green it shall be, in this dress i will go to the fair, where all young fellows will strive to he me for a parter;but no-i shall refuse every one of them, and with a disdainful toss turn from them."

transported with this idea, she could not forbear acting with her head the thought that passed in her mind, when down came the can of milk!and all her imaginary hiness vanished in a moment.

the day is cold,and dark,and dreary;

it rains,and the wind is never weary;

the vine still clings to the moldering wall,

but at every gust the dead lees fall,

and the day is dark and dreary.

my life is cold and dark and dreary;

it rains and the wind is never weary;

my though still cling to the moldering past,

but the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,

and the days are dark and dreary.

be still,sad heart!and cease repining;

behind the clouds is the sun still shining;

thy fate is the common fate of all,

into each life some rain must fall,

some days must be dark and dreary.

天冷、阴暗、沉闷;

下着雨,风也刮个不停;

我的生活寒冷、阴郁、沉闷;

下着雨,风也刮个不停;

安静吧,忧伤的心!别再悔恨;

乌云后面太阳依然辉煌灿烂;

 The Origin of Refrigerators

By the mid-nineth century, the term"icebox"had entered the American language, but icewas still only beginning to affect the diet of ordinary citizens in the United States. The ice tradegrew with the growth of cities.Ice was used in hotels, terns, and hospitals, and by someforward-looking city dealers in fresh meat, fresh fish, and butter. After the Civil War (1861-1865),as ice was used to refrigerate freight cars, it also came into household use. Even before 1880,half the ice sold in New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, and one-third of that sold in Bostonand Chicago, went to families for their own use.

This had become possible because a new household convenience, the icebox,a precursor ofthe modern refrigerator, had been invented. Making an efficient icebox was not as easy as wemight now suppose. In the early nineth century, the knowledge of the physics of heat, which was essential to a science of refrigeration, was rudimentary. The commonsense notionthat the best icebox was one that prevented the ice from melting was of course mistaken, for itwas the melting of the ice that performed the cooling.

Nevertheless, early efforts to economize ice included wring the ice in blankets, which keptthe ice from doing its job. Not until near the end of the nineth century did inventorsachieve the delicate balance of insulation and circulation needed for an efficient icebox.Butas early as 1803, an ingenious Maryland farmer, Thomas Moore, had been on the right track. He owned a farm about twenty miles outside the city of Washington, for which the village ofGeorgetown was the market center.

When he used an icebox of his own design to transport his butter to market, he found thatcustomers would pass up the rapidly melting stuff in the tubs of his compes to pay apremium price for his butter, still fresh and hard in neat, one-pound bricks. One advantage ofhis icebox, more explained, was that farmers would no longer he to trel to market at nightin order to keep their produce cool.

 The Organic Foods

Are organically grown foods the best food choices? The advantages claimed for such foods overconventionally grown and marketed food products are now being debated. Advocates oforganic foods -- a term whose meaning varies greatly -- frequently proclaim that suchproducts are safer and more nutritious than others.

The growing interest of consumers in the safety and nutritional quality of the typical NorthAmerican diet is a welcome development. However, much of this interest has been sparked bysweeping claims that the food supply is unsafe or inadequate in meeting nutritional needs.

Although most of these claims are not supported by scientific evidence, the preponderanceof written material advancing such claims makes it difficult for the general public to separatefact from fiction. As a result, claims that eating a diet consisting entirely of organically grownfoods prevents or cures disease or provides other benefits to health he become widelypublicized and form the basis for folklore.

Almost daily the public is besieged by claims for "no-aging" diets, new vitamins and otherwonder foods. There are numerous unsubstantiated reports that natural vitamins aresuperior to synthetic ones, that fertilized eggs are nutritionally superior to unfertilized eggs, that untreated grains are better than fumigated grains and the like.

One thing that most organically grown food products seem to he in common is that they costmore than conventionally grown foods. But in many cases consumers are misled if theybelieve organic foods can maintain health and provide better nutritional quality thanconventionally grown foods. So there is real cause for concern if consumers particularly thosewith limited incomes, distrust the regular food supply and buy only expensive organic foodsinstead.

 The Nobel Academy

For the last 82 years, Sweden's Nobel Academy has decided who will receive the Nobel Prize inLiterature, thereby determining who will be elevated from the great and the near great to theimmortal. But today the Academy is coming under hey criticism both from the without andfrom within. Critics contend that the selection of the winners often has less to do with truewriting ability than with the peculiar internal politics of the Academy and of Sweden itself.According to Ingmar Bjorksten, the cultural editor for one of the country's two majornewspapers, the prize continues to represent "what people call a very Swedish exercise:reflecting Swedish tastes." The Academy has defended itself against such charges ofprovincialism in its selection by asserting that its physical distance from the great literarycapitals of the world actually serves to protect the Academy from outside influences. This maywell be true, but critics respond that this very distance may also be responsible for theAcademy's inability to perceive accurately authentic trends in the literary world. Regardlessof concerns over the selection process, however, it seems that the prize willcontinue to surviveboth as an indicator of the literature that we most highly praise, and as an elusive goal thatwriters seek. If for no other reason, the prize will continue to be desirable for the financialrewards that accompany it; not only is the cash prize itself considerable, but it alsodramatically increases sales of an author's books.

 Evolution of Sleep

Sleep is very ancient. In the electroencephalographic sense we share it with all the primates and almost all the other mammals and birds: it may extend back as far as the reptiles.

There is some evidence that the two types of sleep, dreaming and dreamless, depend on the life-style of the animal, and that predators are statistically much more likely to dream than prey, which are in turn much more likely to experience dreamless sleep. In dream sleep, the animal is powerfully immobilized and remarkably unresponsive to external stimuli. Dreamless sleep is much shallower, and we he all witnessed cats or dogs cocking their ears to a sound when arently fast asleep.

The fact that deep dream sleep is rare among prey today seems clearly to be a product of natural selection, and it makes sense that today, when sleep is highly evolved, the stupid animals are less frequently immobilized by deep sleep than the smart ones. But why should they sleep deeply at all? Why should a state of such deep immobilization ever he evolved? Perhaps one useful hint about the original function of sleep is to be found in the fact that dolphins and whales and aquatic mammals in general seem to sleep very little. There is, by and large, no place to hide in the ocean.

Could it be that, rather than increasing an animal's vulnerability, the function of sleep is to decrease it? Wilse Webb of the University of Florida and Ray Meddis of London University he suggested this to be the case. It is conceivable that animals who are too stupid to be quiet on their own initiative are, during periods of high risk, immobilized by the implacable arm of sleep. The point seems particularly clear for the young of predatory animals. This is an interesting notion and probably at least partly true.

Venice ? Traghetto

Along the 3.5km stretch of Venice's Grand Canal there are just three bridges, so how do you get across? By Traghetto (meaning 'ferry' in Italian), of course. The unglamorous sibling of the gondola; these no-frills boats get passengers from one side of the canal to the other for a meagre fee. You can pick up a Traghetto from any of the seven piers along the canal - just look for the yellow signs pointing you towards the landings. Each boat is rowed by two oarsmen - one at the bow and one behind the passengers, as in a gondola - if you want to ride like a Venetian, stand for the short journey.

 Pakistan - Tangah

Se yourself a few bucks in Pakistan and ride on a Tangah, rather than the more commonly used rickshaws and taxis. A Tangah is a carriage, sitting atop two large wooden wheels (not exactly designed for comfort, so expect a sore bottom on a long journey! ), pulled by one or two horses. They he a low-glamour, but high fun factor and he become more widely used in Pakistan for enjoyment, rather than as a functional way of getting around. Just beware that they're not the speediest way to trel!

 Cambodia - Bamboo train

Those with a strong constitution may want to ride a Cambodian bamboo train - known locally as a nori. Passengers sit on a makeshift bamboo 'train' (basically just a bamboo platform) powered by an electric generator engine, trelling at up to 40km/h. The unmaintained railway tracks make for a bumpy ride and the closest you'll get to luxury is sitting on a grass mat. But the fares are low and this is a once in a lifetime experience, as all the locals use them for getting around..

 Philippines - Jeepney

The exhaust-belching people-carriers powered by ancient diesel car engines that careen around Filipino city streets are actually pieced-together former World War II army Jeeps. Adorned with painted flags, eagles, and starbursts, jeepneys are traditionally given names such as "Taurus" and "Mr. Lover Boy." They trel at breakneck speed overloaded with people and produce, often failing to come to a complete stop for passengers to leap on and off. These dirty, decrepit workhorses and their doctored diesel are responsible for a particularly toxic form of air pollution as well as health problems.

 Thailand ? Tuk Tuk

Brightly colored, three-wheeled tuk tuks beetle about Bang, cramming passengers into their covered back seats as they battle insane traffic and hurtle about in the heat, humidity, and pollution. The impatient drivers of these rusting, souped-up golf carts hurtle from one lane of traffic to another, barely registering the presence of lumbering buses, thundering trucks, and the mosquito fleets of other tuk tuk drivers. As you idle, you'll he the chance to really enjoy how the noisy vehicles themselves contribute substantially to pollution. Tourists often find themselves delivered to an extra, unexpected stop en route as tuk tuk drivers attempt to get a cut of commission at stores where they hen to take a detour.

 India - Elephant Howdah

"Howdah" translates as "throne," a throwback to the days when the ornate platforms transported India's royalty from one place to the next. These days, it tends to be an array of tourists rather than the traditional aristocratic loads with which these big beasts of burden are encumbered. Howdahs can range from a simple seat and canopy to an opulent, gilt and jewel-encrusted carriage, complete with windows.

An undated image of the human brain taken through scanning technology. Researchers from Japan, Canada and Germany he found that it is our left brain that picks out the desired sounds from a cacophony of loud, competing sounds.[Agencies]

Ever wondered how we are able to conduct a conversation at a noisy party? Researchers from Japan, Canada and Germany he found that it is our left brain that picks out the desired sounds from a cacophony of loud, competing sounds.

"In daily life, we are always exposed to several noises at the same time and we he to pick up important signals, for example, speech sounds, from the background noises," wrote researcher Ryusuke Amiga from Japan's National Institute for Physiological Sciences.

"We found that the left hemisphere is generally dominant for auditory processing in noisy environments," he wrote in an email response to questions from Reuters.

It is well known that speech signals are processed in the left brain.

But this study, led by Hidehiko Okamoto and Christo Pantev at the University of Muenster in Germany, furthers our understanding of how the human brain is able to zero in on the specific sounds it wants and process them.

In the latest issue of the online journal BMC Biology, the scientists said they used neuroimaging and observed neural mechanisms in volunteers who were exposed to different combinations of tests and background sounds.

"Test sounds were played either to the left or to the right ear, while the competing noise was presented either to the same or to the opposite ear," they wrote.

"By monitoring the brain's response to these different sound combinations, the team observed that the left hemisphere was the site of most neural activity associated with processing sounds in a noisy environment."

Man's youth is a wonderful thing: it is so full of anguish and of magic and he never comes to know it as it is, until it has gone from him forever. It is the thing he cannot bear to lose, it is the thing whose passing he watches with infinite sorrow and regret, it is the thing whose loss with a sad and secret joy, the thing he would never willingly relive again, could it be restored to him by any magic.

Why is this? The reason is that the strange and bitter miracle of life is nowhere else so evident as in our youth. And what is the essence of that strange and bitter miracle of life which we feel so poignant , so unutterable, with such a bitter pain and joy, when we are young? It is this: that being rich, we are so poor; that being mighty, we can yet he nothing; that seeing, breathig, smelling, tasting all around us the impossible wealth and glory of this earth, feeling with an intolerable certitude that the whole structure of the enchanted life – the most fortunate, wealthy, good, and hy life that any man has ever known – is ours – is ours at once, immediately and forever, the moment that we choose to take a step, or stretch a hand, or say a word—— we yet know that we can really keep, hold, take, and possess forever—— nothing. All passes; nothing lasts: the moment that we put our hand upon it , it melts away like smoke, is gone forever, and the snake is eating at our heart again; we see then what we are and what our lives must come to.

The boys' mother heard that a clergyman in town had been successful in disciplining children, so she asked if he would speak with her boys. The clergyman agreed, but asked to see them individually. So the mother sent her 8-year-old first, in the morning, with the older boy to see the clergyman in the afternoon.

The clergyman, a huge man with a booming voice, sat the younger boy down and asked him sternly, "Where is God?"

The boy's mouth dropped open, but he made no response, sitting there with his mouth hanging open, wide-eyed. So the clergyman repeated the question in an even sterner tone, "Where is God!!?" Again the boy made no attempt to answer. So the clergyman raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy's face and bellowed, "Where is God?"

The boy screamed and bolted from the room, ran directly home and dove into his closet, slamming the door behind him. When his older brother found him in the closet, he asked, "What hened?"

Love of a Life timeOnce upon a time a teacher and his student lay down under the big tree near the big grass area.

Then suddenly the student asked the teacher.

Teacher, I’m confused, how do we find our soul mate?

Can you please help me?”

Silent for a few seconds, the teacher then answered, “Well, it’s a pretty hard and an easy question.”

The teacher continued, “Look that way, there is a lot of grass, why don’t you walk there?

Please don’t walk backwards, just walk straight ahead.

On your way, try to find a blade of beautiful grass and pick it up and then give it to me. But just one.”

The student said, “Well, OK then... wait for me...” and walked straight ahead to the grassy field.

A few minutes later the student came back.

The teacher asked, “Well, I don’t see a beautiful blade of grass in your hand.”

The student said, “On my journey, I found quite a few beautiful blade of grass,

but I thought that I would find a better one, so I didn’t pick it.

But I didn’t realize that I was at the end of the field, and I hadn’t picked any because you told me not to go back, so I didn’t go back.”

Did the Earth Move for YouEleven-year-old Angela was stricken with a debilitating disease involving her nervous system.

She was unable to walk and her movement was restricted in other ways as well.

The doctors did not hold out much hope of her ever recovering from this illness.

They predicted she’d spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair.

They said that few, if any, were able to e back to normal after contracting this disease.

The little girl was undaunted.

There, lying in her hospital bed, she would vow to anyone who’d listen that she was definitely going to be walking again someday.

She was transferred to a specialized rehabilitation hospital in the San Francisco Bay area.

Whatever therapies could be lied to her case were used.

The therapists were charmed by her undefeatable spirit.

They taught her about imaging — about seeing herself walking.

If it would do nothing else, it would at least give her hope and something positive to do in the long waking hours in bed.

Angela would work as hard as possible in physical therapy, in whirlpools and in exercise sessions.

But she worked just as hard lying there faithfully doing her imaging, visualizing herself moving, moving, moving!

One day, as she was using all her might to imagine her legs moving again, it seemed as though one miracle had hened:

The bed moved! She screamed out, “Look what I’m doing! Look! Look! I can do it! I moved, I moved!”

Of course, at this very moment everyone else in the hospital was screaming, too, and running for cover.

People were screaming, equipment was falling and glass was breaking.

You see, it was the recent San Francisco earthquake.

But don’t tell that to Angela.

She’s convinced that she did it.

And now only a few years later, she’s back in school.

You see, anyone who can shake the earth between San Francisco and Oakland can conquer a piddling little disease, can’t they?
